Silk Road Tour Operators Forum

Thursday, 7 March 2019; 14:00 - 16:00

Palais West Room, ITB Berlin 2019

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), supported by ITB Berlin, EastguidesWest and the Phoenicians Route, hosted a 2 hour forum focused on improving cooperation between the various tourism stakeholders active within the sphere of cultural tourism routes.

Following introductory presentations on cooperation opportunities and recent activities happening along the Silk Road and the Phoenicians Route, plus a country presentation by the Republic of Azerbaijan, a training session was held by Mr. Barnany Davies and Ms. Sjannie Hulsman from EastguidesWest centred on stakeholder expectations and service quality.

Both tour operators and locally based Destination Management Companies (DMC’s) face similar difficulties when planning and marketing specialised tours and tourism packages. By looking at best-practice examples currently being implementing within the field, strategies on how to build and maintain trust among partners were discussed. Trustworthiness and service excellence were presented as key elements ensuring a balanced approach between the demand and supply sides of the tourism industry.

UNWTO wishes to express its gratitude to all speakers for their fantastic input, and to all attendants for their time and inte

Once acclaimed as the "greatest route in the history of mankind", modern-day travellers experience the Silk Road as a myriad of interconnected routes, incredibly rich in natural and cultural, but spread across various countries throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe. Hence, is it feasible to promote the Silk Road as an overarching tourism route? Is dividing the Silk Road into thematic tourism themes or cluster regions the road to success? What role can marketing and social media play in promoting the Silk Road? These and many more questions were assessed by a panel of tourism experts active across the region.

The UNWTO Silk Road Programme would like to thank Ms. Lyn Hughes, Mr. Jonny Bealby, Mr. Andreas Janz and Mr. Steven Hermans for their excellent contributions. Special gratitude is also due to all attendants for their support, we sincerely hope you enjoyed the seminar.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), together with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia and the World Cities Scientific Development Alliance (WCSDA), organized the International Silk Road Conference on Nomadic Tourism and Sustainable Cities in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia on 13-15 October 2016.

The conference gathered Ministers and high-level officials from 9 UNWTO Silk Road Member States, official representatives from Silk Road regions, the sister UN Agency the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and UNWTO Affiliate Members to address the potential of tourism initiatives focused on nomadic tourism and sustainable city tourism.

The Silk Road countries agreed that, while the Silk Road presents extensive opportunities for development and growth, long-term success will depend upon increased collaboration in the three key areas identified in the Silk Road Action Plan: marketing and promotion, capacity building and destination management, and travel facilitation.

UNWTO would like to thank the co-organizers and all attending delegates for their great input and support during the event. Special gratitude is also due to Turkish Airlines and MIAT for offering sponsorship to the conference.
